Don't be afraid to say no. If they expect us to put in the hours of an I-banker, then they should pay us like one.
As far as raises, who cares. You'll never make money there unless you marry the firm. And judging from your interest right now in work/life balance, I doubt you're in that bucket. I left public accounting this summer and nobody cares that I significantly exceeded expectations my first year as a Senior and ran circles around folks with more experience. All outsiders see is CPA, 3 yrs big 4 experience. |

I don't think I've ever seen the argument framed better.
You are absolutely correct. In the jobs I've had since leaving public accounting, none of my employers cared about the blood, sweat, and tears I put into the CPA firm. They simply looked at the fact that I had the CPA and public accounting experience.
You're also correct about the money being limited "unless you marry the firm". For those desiring a life outside of work, my advice would be to 1) get the public accounting experience, 2) pass the CPA while you're there, then 3) get out.
There's more to life than work.
