I am currently employed in a big 4 firm, but not in tax. I need advice on the following as I would like to transition into tax.
Go back to school for 1 year to get a Masters in Tax and then get a job in big 4 at higher salary? (opportunity cost - foregone income)
Or switch over to tax and go to school part time at a lower salary, taking 2 or more years to get the Masters?
Any advice on this is appreciated.. |

Hey Slick,
At my Big 4 company, they pay for tuition if you get your Masters in Tax PT while working in Tax.
I also had a buddy who worked for a Big 4 in LA and got his masters in Tax paid for by the COmpany. The only condition is that he was required to stay with the firm for at least 2 years.
I'm not sure about the difference in pay if you got the Masters first, but at least on the audit side at my big 4, any salary difference from getting a masters in accounting disappears after a year or 2 (yes, that is a bit unfair).
The good thing about switching over to tax is that you might not have to go through as rigorous a process of interviewing, etc.
Note: I'm a former Big 4 public accountant who spent time in both audit and tax.
