In Reply To: the types of consulting you're talking about, probably management consulting, aren't really around the Big 4 anymore. But in terms of jumping to valuation/transaction advisory, it is common for people to switch out of audit to those roles. I personally know a few people who earned their MBA's part-time while at a Big 4 then left for pure consulting firms.
Message: I've seen the same thing. Those who do well in audit and put in their dues can get transfered to the valuation/transaction groups - (know a guy who recently switched over to PwCs). Frankly - people use the word 'consulting' a little too broadly. Most undergrads are talking about management/strategic consulting which doesn't really happen at big four much any more. big four has transaction services, valuation, transfer pricing; basically due diligence related to accounting, taxation, or the law. they don't get called in by companies to work on their competitivenstrategy like say a bain or mckinsey consultant might do. a lot of 'consultants' nowadays are also doing process/sox work to document and test controls. the world of IT consulting is a whole other world as well - you have to get specific in what you're interested in.
