Message: I'm slowly arriving at the end of my very long education (third-tier MBA with accounting concentration and prior coursework), and many of my Profs encourage me to enter the Big 4. They did it, too, and have all moved on to other things (CFA, big oil) before getting their PhDs. They didn't speak of such a dreaded "breaking out" process. I guess if you want to get into IB, that must be tough. But generally people tell me Big 4 is a great stepping stone. All my peers are having a VERY tough time finding jobs, and although they poke fun at me for the accounting thing (out of ignorance, I assume) I happen to be the one taking my search very casually.
