In Reply To: Hey everyone. First time poster here so be gentle!! I'm graduating in May as a top accounting student at a smaller business school in Texas. Unlike the rest of my peers, I don't want to start my career with a firm in the Dallas area. I would rather work for a Big 4 up in New York City for a few years to jumpstart my career and then transfer back to a local office. I already have an office visit lined up with one firm in NYC and am still waiting to hear back from a couple others. Questions: 1. Would my experience in NYC create long term value for me in my future career opportunities? 2. Living in NY is expensive! Should I be able to expect a salary premium to compensate for the higher cost of living in NY over Dallas? Any help or advice would be great!
Message: I can't help you much with the salary info since I don't work in Acct in NY, but you can find that info here and salary.com. However, my friend did just land a job in the low $50s. As far as living here, it's going to be expensive, if you don't mind roomates, that's your best bet. You can get a share in Manhattan for $800-1500. Food will be your 2nd biggest expense if you are not planning to hit 5th ave, right away. If you need a place all to yourself. Expect to pay the same money for 1 bedroom in outer boroughs, or much more in Manhattan. Outer boroughs means commuting by train 40-80 mins, not having a car or getting scalped on insurance. Nighlife is expensive but its your choice where you consume your alcohol and how much you want to pay per drink.
