In Reply To: I have the option of returning to IU. It is higher ranked with a much more solid reputation than FL I believe. How important is the institution to placement? Do all degrees travel well? Or should you go to a school within the region you want to live?
Message: Normally, I just read the Board, but for you I'll make an exception. New Roads, I got my undergrad in sociology and then worked my butt off for two years in a MAcc program, taking UG and grad courses together until I finished the requirements. Taking your GMAT and going straight into the MAcc program, instead of BS accounting, saves a lot of time because you normally do not have to take business core courses in the MAcc. The extra bonus is that you also get a Master's degree and are considered more well-rounded compared to your acctg peers applying for the same positions. Join Beta Alpha Psi and network. Get good grades and intern. I went to the Univ. of Hawaii (great acctg program) and will make $50K+ starting on the West Coast at a Big4. Your degree will travel well if you show local recruiters that you are worth their effort to help you relocate to another city. You can do it, but you have to work hard. BTW, sociology rocks! Good luck!
