What do you want to do?
I am not sure what a commerce degree is, I would assume along the lines of a business degree? No matter what degree you get, you will need experience to receive the CMA. So, pick whatever you think will fit best with your goals.
I focused on a broad business degree and then took a few extra classes to qualify to take the CPA here in the US. Not having an accounting degree made it a little harder to get into public accounting, but once I was employeed by a local firm my degree didn't make a difference. It is about personality and ambition. But neither of those will be good unless you enjoy your work.
So, try and figure out where you want to go first. Do you want to do public accounting, audit/tax etc. Or do you want to go private.
Also, enroll in some classes and try and find an internship. Even without the business background, if you are taking classes and will obtain a business degree, most companies will it least take a look at you. |

Hello,
Thanks again for the reply. A commerce degree is the equivalent to a business degree. I'm pretty sure that's what i"m going to do and then do a major in accounting and try and get my CMA. In the meantime, while going to business school, do you know what's the best way to get experience/interships? Should I just contact some local accounting firms? I'm not exactly sure what kind of accounting I want to do. I'd eventually like to do management accounting, but I"m still learning so much about what exactly accountants do to really know what I'll be most passionate about.
Thanks!
