In Reply To: Recent law school grad here, with an opportunity to work in a fruitful tax practice at a Big 4. What options will I have with respect to moving from an accounting firm to a law firm in the future? How do law firms look at this kind of experience, when they decide to hire lateral associates? By taking this offer, I am branding myself as a "tax man," whether I work for an accounting firm or a law firm?
Message: I am in a similar situation. My understanding from people who have began their careers in Big 4 is that it is hard to jump from Big 4 to Law Firms. However, there are a number of factors that go into it. 1)It depends on what type of firm you are looking to jump to. If you are trying to jump to a top-flight white shoe firm, then it will probably be hard. But if you are trying to jump to mid size or boutique tax or T&E Firm, then not so hard.2) Depends on the economic situation. As the economy improves people will have more business and thus need more tax advice. Thus, law firms would rather have experienced tax experts than some newby. And don't forget about in house tax counsel at companies. They maybe more receptive than law firms.
