I have a friend who has a MBA in finance degree, but he is very interested in getting in auditing career in big 4. He is very confident, smart, energetic, outgoing, and have great interpersonal and communicational skills. But he is not sure what is the best way for him to get into this industry? Shoud he pursue an master degree in accounting? or can he simply take some undergraduate accounting and auditing courses and apply for big 4? He personally prefer the latter way since most key accounting courses are taught in undergraduate program. But he is not sure after finishing those courses, if big4 will be interest in him based on his education background. Other than the education backgroud, he definitly has no problem getting in big 4 since he is such an good and smart guy and he is enthusiastic about auditing career.
Any advice will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance |

The big concern with hiring people without an accounting degree is that they can't take the CPA exam (because they don't have the education requirements). If you don't become a CPA, you can't become a manager (if you pass an equivalent professional cretification, you're ok i guess...but that isn't the case here), and if you can't become a manger your career is limited to about 5 years. They don't want to invest time and energy into people that are virtually guaranteed to be gone that quick (true, most people are gone by then anyway...but they at least wwant people with a chance of making it all the way). I would hate to tell him to get another degree, especially a Macc, which is possibly less useful than even an MBA (no offense its just reality, unless the MBA is from a top 10...and even then its up for debate). Take some classes, or see have him see if his state has a CPA certification process that doesn't require accounting background. I'd go for accounting classes from a very cheap local school (forget name schools it doesn't matter at this point).
