Greetings-
I want to have a career in financial or consulting industry, and I want to start by taking the CPA or CFA exam. Could anyone please share ideas with me on which one is more appropriate?
My background includes a Bachelor's degree in Economics, and a Master's degree in public management. So I took a few accounting and finance classes at both levels.
Thank you for your help! |

Hi,
The CPA exam won't be worth a thing unless you plan to work for a public accounting firm and get the other requirements out of the way. The CFA is more geared towards working for the brokerages or other private/public companies that hire analysts. Your Master's seems to put you on track for a more governmental-type of job. There are jobs at the Federal Reserve, SEC, etc. that could take you on the Analyst track more easily.
If you are interesting in consulting, the MBA seems to be the best way to go, but you could probably get in the door at a Morgan Stanley or Smith Barney as an analyst (with the CFA) or as an associate. Check their websites and see if those are appealing to you.
