Generally, internal auditors can pursue a few different options.
1. They can become a controller at a field location after becoming an expert on the accounting process
2. They can become a Financial Analyst for the company.
3. They can go into other lines at the corporate office such as Tax. |

There are two types of interal auditing:
1) Financial
2) Operational
The operational auditing function is less than 50% financial or sometimes even 0%, and takes more of a balanced scorecard approach toward performance measurement. Here's a path . . one of my friends who has been performing operational auditing has just been scouted out by a headhunter for an analyst position with a venture capital firm who is looking for people with solid operational knowledge of an industry.
