I have very few regrets for not going academia. The only thing I would have liked is the job security for life and the defined benefit retirement plan. Business is full of useless wind-bags - but at least you are well-paid for dealing with them. I think Kissinger once said something to the effect of "debates are so vitriolic in academia because so little is at stake."
