Yes, they really asked this.
I think asking a question about why a person wants to relocate has absolutely nothing to do with the career of an individual, so it should not even be a question when hiring. Today, many positions are mobile/telecommute anyway. So, theoritcally, anyone could live anywhere, given specific HUB locations throughout the U.S. It's kind of like a quality of life benefit in a way. But not a benefit when they are drilling you about relocating.
I could understand if there was a need in that specific area, however, as a candidate wanting to relocate, that's my choice & preference & goal in life.
I must say, some interviewers don't really think about a persons ambitions, becuase at the end of the day, all people want to do is have a good job & work..
