In Reply To: Thanks for getting in touch with me. I am a US Citizen, have worked in varying capacities as a network engineer for the past five years at mostly large telecoms (SBC, Motorola, Sprint). I have a masters degree in computer engineering and Cisco CCNA certification. I've been doing contract work recently, and am tired of the lack of job stability (contracts ending early etc). I want to work at Accenture because it's a big company, some stability, is located downtown close to me, and there is lot of room for professional growth. (I'm about to embark on an MBA, and want to be in a position to quickly utilize it when I'm done). I'm not necessarily only looking at Accenture. Deloitte etc I'm also considering, but I have a a few friends in Accenture and it seems to be a good company that's doing a lot of hiring right now. Thanks
Message: Maybe your skills aren't what's in demand at Accenture. Are you deep into a niche or legacy technology? If you find you can't get into Accenture, IBM, Deloitte, or even other firms like CapGemini or BearingPoint, it may be time to look at your current skill set and update or transition accordingly. The roles the firms are hiring for reflect the needs of their clients and their pipeline of available work. Otherwise, you might think about peddling your wares to "standard companies" and using them to update your skills or cross-train into something else, then leveraging that to break into one of the firms. Granted that approach may take a while, it may take a while but consulting work is highly cyclical with the economy and the time may not be right just now.
