In Reply To: I received an offer from Accenture in their nyc office for their consulting analyst program (new hire out of college) and recently accepted it. I know that Accenture has a business consulting capability group, which is comprised of strategy, finance and performance management, human performance, supply chain management, etc. I don't really want to be pushed into an IT role in my first job, as my main competency/interest is finance/business. I am wondering what are my chances of getting into the business consulting capability group (not strategy - i know that it has a separate interview process) vs getting into business and systems integration, which i do not really want to do. What are some of the responsibilities/projects of a business consulting (minus strategy) analyst? Will i be able to get into this group? Have I made the right decision to join ACN, or am I expecting something that will not happen? Please help....
Message: The business consulting group at ACN is pretty much a separate area of the company with its own recruiting process and people. If you are being recruited by them, then you know it. (Hiring for internal, back office jobs -- "Enterprise Services" -- works the same way. A separate group and you know if you are being recruited for a marketing or internal accounting job.) If you are not sure, then you are being recruited for the main area of the company, IT services (which makes up about 95% of the client-facing work). So it's not a matter of "getting into" one of the other, non-IT, groups. The way to get in is to be recruited from the outside. There are some rare cases where someone inside the main part of ACN was able to "transfer" to a job outside of the mainstream, IT services into either back office (Enterprise Services) or into management consulting (Business Consulting). But this is very, very rare. You should not "expect" anything other than working in business IT integration and implementation work unless you are specifically being recruited by one of the areas inside business consulting (such as FPM or S&BA). It's like going to law school and expecting to get a job in medicine when you get out. So make sure you know which area of the company you are interviewing in.
