I desperately need help in deciding which offer to accept. I have two offers in Northern Europe (both contracts lies unsigned on my desk), one from ACN, entry level analyst in FS (not IT-consultant) and one entry level at McKinsey.
Is it true that I will work similarily to an IT-consultant at ACC? Are the hours longer at McK? What about travels?
The decision is complicated by the fact that I am to become a father the month before I am to start, and I would like to see my kid once in a while. On the other hand, McKinsey has been a goal of mine since starting business school.
Please help me to weigh the pros and cons with regards to the nature of the assignments and the work/life balance. I should also mention that I will get paid OT with Accenture (excangeable for free time), something I will not with McK.
Thanks in advance!!! |

To dispute andy_biz's reply I would actually contend that the quality of projects undertaken by ACN's strategy personnel is often on par with the type of work done by McK, et al.
The main difference in this case is that coming in as a Business Analyst (the strategy equivalent of an Analyst) in FS would mean that your client interaction and project experience would be almost exclusively limited to FS organisations as opposed to the cross-industry experience you would invariably glean at McK. This is great if you want to specialise in the FS industry (and doubly so if you're based out of a key financial centre and don't have to travel) however if you're not quite sure where you want to go in your career then joining McK would probably give you a broader range of options down the line.
Comparing my experience at ACN to anecdotes told by friends at McK the hours at McK are significantly greater in most cases - that being said you're probably comparing 10 - 12 hour days to 15 hour days so in either case you may not see a lot of your family in the first few years, especially if you're travelling extensively.
