Message: I've heard horror stories of people starting at Accenture and being placed on >2-year projects not even remotely related to their degree or past work experience.
ACN does not give too much credence to past work experience unless it was done while at Accenture. So they will place you wherever they can get the best billing and chargeability. It's as simple as that. As far as your "interests" are concerned ("I'll be miserable if they place me on a project that has nothing to do with my past work experience, degree, or remote interests"), that has zero relevance to how you are staffed. ACN isn't here for your personal gratification, growth, education or interests (although you, on the other hand, are at ACN for ACN's growth, interests and profitability). I've read the other posts in this thread and I have a similar questions to them. If you have previous experience as an IT developer or implementer in a certain industry, why didn't you look for your next IT job at a company within that industry?!?!? Why come to ACN and leave it up to a roll of the dice? You might even end up doing completely different IT work than in your past jobs. Maybe testing or requirements collection (unless that is what you did before, in which case you may end up writing UNIX scripts or installing Siebel or Business Objects). Unless you have a CIS degree (BS in CS or MS in CIS or MS in MIS), your degree has little relevance here. Your past work experience is non-ACN experience, so it doesn't count. You interests are, at best, something that will get in the way of your focus on ACN's needs, unless your interests coincide with how ACN wants to utilize you. So I have to ask again, why did you come here. The IT field has opened up again (except for pure coding and DBA work, which is getting offshored). You surely could find something that matches your skills and career goals.
I'd like to believe it wouldn't happen, but I've heard stories. Stay here, and you will become one of the stories.
