The whole "no travel for new analysts" mantra has been going on for years. Even when I first joined several years ago, they told me I probably wouldn't be doing any traveling for a while because I was new. The next week after training I was on a plane to my first project.
Ideally, the management wants to keep as many people in town as possible to reduce costs, but if you have some skills that are needed elsewhere, get ready to start hanging out at the airport every week!
