Message: I did an internship with Accenture last summer, but have recently turned down a graduate role with them that would have been based in Edinburgh, Scotland. Instead, I'll be joining Arup, a global firm of consulting engineerins. My reasons? Several-fold: 1) Personally, I find IT/Accenture work to be a bit soulless; there's no beauty or art in it. It's all spreadsheets, documentation and code. I don't want to live that life. 2) Again, personally, I didn't fancy the constant travel. 3) The culture at the firm. There are too many people who are here primarily to build their CVs. Many couldn't care less about IT, and fewer still don't give a toss about the firm. I want to work in a firm where most people are there because they enjoy what they do and because they have pride in their employer, not because they get a fat pay-cheque and a good name on their CVs. 4) The distinct lack of professional training. I have nothing against learning on the job, but, in my opinion, it's no substitute for formal instruction in certain fields. Accenture falls way, way short on this. It was a very, very tough decision. I turned down ??28.5k + ??10k bonus for ??23k + ??4k bonus at Arup. And with the Arup job I'll have a much, much higher cost of living due to the location (London). But at the end of the day, I value training and enthusiasm among my colleagues more highly than money. I'm young - I have plenty of time to get rich.
