Hello,
I left ACN last year after working 8 months in New York where ACN paid/withheld state tax. As I now fill out my non-resident tax form it seems I have to pay more New York tax due to married-filing jointly status, spouse income and capital gains that New York wants to know about.
They include this income to determine a state tax amount, and then multiply it by the percentage of only my salary earned in NY. Which results in more tax then was paid by ACN.
Can anyone provide advice on this? Accenture HR services is telling me I have to file and pay the tax. Then request an adequacy review (which is $250), and then hope they decide that ACN should pay the additional amount.
Thanks

remember, when you choose your withholdings, all you're doing is estimating for the end of the year.
if you have capital gains, well, unless you squirrel away what you'll end up paying....that's your deal. the gov't assumes if you're smart enough to make money like that, you're smart enough to understand the taxes to go with it.
anywho, your estimate hits the fan april 15th. withholdings ask 3, maybe 4 questions about you to guess your taxes. your EOY forms are probably around 10+ pages.
if you owe, you have no one to blame but yourself. try the tax professional if you're convinced you've made a mistake, but tax programs are pretty simple to use. i doubt you made a mistake.
taxact is free to download and use. see if your return is the same as what you have already done. or try some other one, too. i don't know of any other 100% free ones. grab it from a friend for research purposes....
