Message: For exceptional, you should unequivocally have an "Exceeds" rating on each major performance factor. Sounds like you are trying to hit the promotion at 18 months. But remember, evaluation time ends May 31 (not August 31). To get the early promote, you need to really bust your ass all year long (June 1 to May 31), getting at least outstanding-like ratings down the line (progressively better reviews, as well) Further, start gathering your army of executives now for promotion. You'll need at least one executive sponsor to push you through the process, and they typically have to make a strong business case for you. On your project, let your aspirations be well-known. Here are some questions to keep in mind: 1. What will it take for you to be operating convicingly at the next level? 2. What will it take for you to get an exceptional? 3. What will it take for you to get your senior executive to go out of his or her way to sponsor you? 4. What will take for your project to back you up for promotion? Define those terms, get general agreement, and deliver those results to the T, with checkpoints every step of the way from now until May. Be sure your CC backs you up 110% as well--it is important/imperative they are involved in these discussions. Even with all of that, there are still never any guarantees, but if you want it bad enough, you'll get it.
