I like EX-AP's idea. You can tell them you have to go to a "community religious event" every Monday and Wednesday (and some Tuesdays and Thursdays) from 7 PM to 10 PM. This event has to be done in these next few critical months otherwise I will miss this golden opportunity and this event does not come for another 20 years. When the event is completed, I will let you know (i.e. the event will be completed at the end of this messy project).

That is the most ridiculous and selfish advice I've ever heard. I'm not suggesting lots of OT is acceptable, but all you do is make the situation worse for everyone else.
Good thing he's an ex-AP.
