I work in IBM BCS public svc sector in DC and want to get into Mngt Consulting (Strategy i.e: Venture Capital, Private Finance) projects. I dont have an MBA but have 8yrs exp. 6 in Finance/Accounting, M&A, Business Process. I want to ideally work at a Bain, BCG or McK. What company would be a better branding leverage to get on those type of projects and work my way into Mngmt Consulting? Help!!!! |

First, are you sure you have a clear idea about what do you want to do? Strategy consulting is not VC or PE work. Strategy consulting typically involves Fortune 500 clients and the projects deal w/ marketing strat, post-merger work, performance analysis, etc. VC&PE deal with financing start up companies and private ownership of mature businesses. See the difference?
Second, the career paths are very different. For 95% of the people strat consulting is a gateway into general management for F500 corps, but not a long term career (3-5 years is typical). VC&PE is usually something you do AFTER a stint on Wall Street.
Third, the entry points for strat consulting are limited. Most people go in after an MBA program, w/ a few very exp. hires that can bring in business (there is undergrad recruiting but on a smaller scale). There are examples of people getting in other ways, but it's very difficult and takes a lot of work. I don't think trying to "trade up" through consulting companies is going to be a winning game plan. But if you want to try it you have to get out of public sector work ASAP.
If you dream is to work for M/B/B your best bet is to go to a top MBA program. That route has the clearest definition and the best chance for success.
