If you live in NY, why did you accept a job that is located in Reston, VA? I can't believe that you have so much trouble finding work that you had to settle for a job in another city. The job recession has pretty much abated. Sure, it's not like it was for IT developers back 5 years ago, but unlike 2002 or 2003, there are jobs out there.
If it's because you want to go into government and public sector work, then you will have to accept the fact that a lot of that kind or work will be in the Washington D.C. area. Otherwise, just hang in there. A job closer to home will come up soon. Be patient. |

If you are being selected for the Reston office they most likely want you for the Government group, which means a career in DC unless you can move over into another unit. If you are valuable to a government project you may have a hard getting away whether you like it or not.
I would look at other IT consulting firms like IBM, Bearing Point, Deloite, or Booz Allen. You also want to try to negotiate operating groups and volunteer for 100% travel - if you travel you can typically choose to live where ever you want.
