One way to work out the travel issue is to relocate ... you could try Chicago for Products or DC for Government. Or just find a long term project and relocate to your client site. I'm currently looking to leave DC so I elected to travel to scout out a cheaper area, but I could have easily stayed in DC and worked Gov for the rest of my career. There are other options if travel is your only sticking point.
