In Reply To: Is it true that most government clients (in the DC area) are very laid back? I heard that they come to work later, leave early (like by 5-5:30pm), wear business casual, no stress, etc.
Message: Haven't read the rest of this thread, just saw this posting about government clients... As with everything else at this company, the answer is "it depends". Primarily it depends on the client you're at and whether or not you're working at a client location or not. Alot of our work is performed at our Reston office as client's don't have the room to house us. Other work is performed at offices that are not the client's offices, but are also not in the Reston office. For example, the DLA project has a couple offices in Alexandria, and all of the USPS project is housed across the street from USPS headquarters. If you're in Reston, the atmosphere for the most part is very laid back as Accenture policies prevail for dress. If you're at one of the "magnet" offices, the same goes for the most part until you get higher up the food chain and have to go meet with clients, at which point you'll have to adhere to client policies. Of course, policies differ from agency/department to agency/department. Some are always business casual, some are business in between Labor Day/Memorial Day, business casual the rest of the year, etc. From what I've seen/heard though, the stress level is as high/almost as high as what I've seen elsewhere. I've been with the company for 5 years and worked in government for 2.5 of those. The stress level is about the same, at least at my project (USPS). Basically it goes from periods of having it easy to periods of wanting to jump out a window :-) Other groups within USPS are under pretty much constant stress. Of course, our clients themselves tend to leave quite early, but that doesn't mean we get to :-) So yeah... it pretty much depends just like everything else in this company. I've had cakewalk projects in government and I've had tear-my-hair out projects... the same as I had when I was in non-government projects.
