In Reply To: I recently graduated with a BA in psychology from a top tier school in the Midwest. My work experience consists of typical college survivor jobs -- a couple of research internships and 2.5 years as a customer service rep at a call center. I am considering applying for an entry level Business Analyst position. Will Accenture and other consulting firms consider hiring someone with my background? What is the typical profile of an entry level candidate?
Message: "Officially" they will look at anyone. In reality, I have found that they tend to look at business and engineering students - as well as those with a strong IT background. If your school really is "top tier" and you are friggin' bright (and I mean BRIGHT) you will probably have better luck with a pure play strategy firm like McKinsey, Bain, etc. ACN tends to look for their "template". Social science grads, unless the job market is really scorching, tend not to fall into their standard "template." Not very fair for social science types, but a safe bet on their part. Now - that is not to say all is hopeless. I personally have only a social science background and in a notoriously soft and arcane area (can't say more). But I managed to get my foot in the consulting door by applying during the late 1990s when their was a supposed shortage of "standard" analyst types. Also, you can get work experience in an industry of interest, work for 2 years or so, and then apply. Your chances will be much better.
