i can't believe this isn't commonly known. just call and ask. sometimes you will have to ask for a superviser.
the airlines will upgrade you to silver status.
united will do it.
american will sometimes. i've known some who get it and some who haven't.
nwa, they will tell you that you can participate in their "promotion". I did this, basically fly 2 round trips and i got silver
delta won't do it.
oh, and for the car rentals, click on the travel channel from portal.accenture and look for rental cars. there used to be a link (i left about 4 months ago, but i doubt its changed) that would take you to the hertz and avis sites to upgrade you to gold and preferred respectively.
also, check that travel site often, lots of deals there. last fall there was a triple marriott points deal, this summer there was and instant gold status at hilton and starwoods.
