my experience might be of help here. I worked for the consulting org in a software firm for almost five years before coming to ACN.
1) Software firm may offer you 20% bonus in good time. in not-so-good time no. the problem is that software firm tends to have very focused products (unless you work for oracle, etc.). Their fate may faulter much quicker than ACN (which has a diversified portfolio of services, enabling them weather the storms better).
2) If you are happy with a good pay check and decent bonus, and work life balance is important to you, take the software firm. but, if you really want to hit it big and don't mind the hours. go with ACN, because you are really making some money when you get to partner. You cannot make the same kind of money even if you are promoted to VP in a software firm (still not bad at all). If you are determined to make partner at ACN, be prepared to do whatever it takes (reads, hours even on the weekends).
Why did I leave the software firm for ACN?
1) I had a great time at the software firm (drinking, clubing, etc.), but my career was not going any where. they re-org every 4 month and I had not career path to follow.
2) I was sick of doing the same thing. I wanted to work for a firm that give you different kind of opportunities. |

hits the nail on the head. I recently worked on an engagement with 4 ACN senior managers. Each trying to make the partner track (statistically, only 1/3 make it). Those lunatics worked 7 am to 7 pm at client. Con-calls all night long with partners on sales work, internal projects, etc. And worked all weekend long - no joke. What a miserable life, in my opinion...but they obviously find the ultimate payout satisfying. It is all a question of values...coming from a family with a workaholic father, I just can't do that to my own kids. Hence, my more laid-back (and non-partner track) approach - which I know will get my counseled out eventually under the up and out system (I'm a SMGR) when I come up against those folks. Don't care at this point - I bank at least half of my check (how many jobs allow you to do that????).
Consulting is an awesome way to earn lots of money (even at SMRGR level it is very sweet to say the least). But it is easy to lose perspective if partner track is your ultimate goal.
