I spent 8 days in Sao Paulo. You definitely need to know Portuguese! There are two classes of people in that and surrounding areas; the haves and have nots; all businesses and housing have iron gates. Will that tell you something? The people I was with were extremely hospitable and a few spoke English; we went to the major market downtown in Sao Paulo and I had to take my watch off because the folks I was with were afraid I would be accosted for it. The biggest problem as I understand it, is that "gringos" are snatched off the street for money. I had a wonderful experience because I was with folks from there; however, they painted a different picture for me if I were on my own. |

I spent 3months in sao paulo in 2004. If I compare it with a regular friday night out on town in stockholm, sao paulo seemed much less violent. I didn't dee any fights or disturbances. everyone seemed quite cool. and I didn??t have any problems, not even once. I know it's stupid, but I could move freely in down town night time. Maybe because I'm black.
