I was a summer this past year and had an excellent experience. Seeeing as all is going well with the MBO, I will likely return this year full-time.
They basically treat you as a full time analyst. You get to travel and all that good stuff and really get the opportunity to experience what life as a consultant is like.
This summer they had us go to Chicago twice -- once for training and once for "Learn About the Firm." We had a good time, went to a Cubs game, bowling night, etc, where all the interns were together. I still stay in touch with several folks from other offices this summer.
All-in-all it's a great experience. Money is good. As for the background check, don't worry about that. They'll send you all the paperwork you need if extended an offer. It's all done by ChoicePoint I think.

Was your internship during undergrad or MBA? If it was during MBA, do you know if ATKearney has an undergrad internship program? (I'm having difficulty finding info on the website, but every consulting company site is like that, heh.) Thanks in advance!
