In 1852, three separate metal companies joined together to create various steel tubes, sheets, plates, and roofing materials. Located in West Virginia, the steel shined brightly and the companies excelled, changing names, picking up subsidiaries, and eventually forming the company known today as WHX. The largest component of WHX, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel, was created when the Pittsburgh Steel Company, the 16th largest steel producer in the U.S., merged with then-Wheeling Steel Corporation in 1968.
