Former coal salesman and retail shop owner John H. Patterson bought a cash register manufacturer in 1882 and founded The National Cash Register Company (NCR) in 1884. The first office, with 13 employees, was located in Dayton, Ohio. In 1906, Patterson commissioned inventor Charles Kettering to design the first cash register powered by an electric motor.
