As part of Italy's reconstruction in the wake of World War II, Mediobanca was first created by a joint initiative organised by Banca Commerciale Italiana, Credito Italiano and Banco di Roma. Their goal was to provide medium-term financing for Italian manufacturers and to create a link between investors and Italian industries struggling to recover from the war. From its birth in 1944, until 1973, Mediobanca was limited to medium-term credit. Then, in October 1973, the bank changed its mission to include financing on terms of up to 20 years.
