Best Internship Ever

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2014 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Ton of responsibility on live deals. Working with very down to earth people who have the same mindset and goals.

Downers

Nothing, this was the perfect internship. The hours were obviously long, being that the role was an investment banking analyst; but this was expected and is similar to every other bank.

Advice to Potential Interns

Top tier bank that provides a great culture, work life balance, pay and placement opportunities.

Great Learning Experience

The culture at the firm was wonderful, everyone was really nice and willing to help out. The company was also not overly hierarchical and I had casual conversations with Directors. Also, the industry group that I was in worked on interesting companies that I had heard of before.

Downers

The internship exceeded my expectations in every way.

Advice to Potential Interns

I would say that you should think about the people you are going to be working with for 90 hours a week. Fit is the most important aspect of where you want to work, and all the employees at RBC are extremely nice and willing to help.

Advice to Potential Interns

RBC Capital Markets is a growing bank. This means that there is a great opportunity for new hires, since they need more employees to keep up with the increase in work. This also means that there is a lot of exposure to all aspects of the work, since they need more experienced employees to help.

An Introduction to a Career in Municipal Finance

3.2 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2014 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

The exposure to working in a corporate office for a salary versus hourly wage, working closely with bankers at all experience levels, the level of responsibility given to interns for tasks and projects

Downers

Work-life balance, intern events (and conflicts between work and being able to attend events), prospects for career growth

Advice to Potential Interns

Careful consideration of a career specialized in Municipal Finance, a growing department within the corporation. Note that compensation compared with other companies' intern programs may not be as high.

Sample Interview Questions

What is the view of current financial markets and interest rates?

What is your view of Janet Yellen as chair of the Federal Reserve, and her prospects for US Economic Recovery?

How many tennis balls would it take to fill a Boeing 747?

Advice to Management

Compensation could be more competitive (housing / signing bonus, overtime) to be on par with other programs. Hours for interns could also be improved, to limit weekends if needed or total weekly hours.
