Learn How To Be A Developer At A Big Financial Services Company

5.0 of 5 stars

Chicago, IL | 2017 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Learned a lot about navigating a large corporation as an engineer, good pay, good connections

Downers

I didn't get the kind of work I asked for

Advice to Potential Interns

Capital One is extremely technologically forward thinking, especially when compared to other banks. That being said, they have some tech debt from years of using older technologies. They will be dealing with this for at least until the end of 2018. Also, who your manager is plays a huge role on the type of work you do and how much you get out of the experience.

Advice to Management

When I interviewed, I specified what areas I was interested in, but those requests weren't met.

Sample Interview Questions

1. Standard tech ds&a interview
2. Case study interview, which is a lot of algebra
3. Behavioral interview

Advice to Potential Interns

You need to email your manager asap to find out what you will be doing or what technologies you'll be working with

Plano, TX | 2017 | VERIFIED INTERN

The best part was the work culture. My manager and team were very open and willing to provide help. I learned several new skills through this internship.

Downers

I would have liked a different project that allowed my to do something more web based.

Advice to Potential Interns

Make contact with your manger early so that you can ask if there is anything you can read up on before the internship starts. That way you can hit the ground running. It took about a week for me to fully understand my project before I could get started coding.

The Best Internship Experience I've Had in 3 Years

5.0 of 5 stars

New York, NY | 2017 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

Definitely the work and opportunity to meet people who are very high up the hierarchy. I've met everyone in my chain up to the SVP. The work I did is absolutely going to be utilized and my manager put in a lot of time to help me become a better engineer - I definitely wasn't just a code monkey to C1.

Downers

I think Capital One could do better with benefits. Google and Facebook, for example, have kitchens and provide lunch and dinner. That said, a lot of those benefits at other companies are meant to keep you at work longer - Capital One is very much about the 9-5 life; the office is literally empty by 5:30.

Advice to Potential Interns

The tech culture is just as good as any tech company out there. Capital One isn't like other banks, and quite honestly the culture is a lot better than a lot of tech companies out thre.

Advice to Management

Compensation is the number one thing. Capital One wants to hire top talent, so they should pay like it. Full-time offers this year are 106k and 10k signing bonus. That's 15k less on both average pay from top tech companies and on signing bonus for non-return folks. If you're returning from an internship, you get an even greater signing bonus.
