SpaceX treats the interns just like full time employees, providing a valuable experience to the interns in the program.

There is not much to complain about the internships. There was sometime unclear project goals but this was really a minor issue.

Advice to Potential Interns

Be prepared to put in the effort to finish your projects. SpaceX will require you to manage your work efficiently.

Advice to Management

Sometimes better training would be good for learning where things are at the company and also helping to introduce new hires to workplace.

My co-workers are all very nice. They don't treat me as the stereotypical intern and are always willing to teach me something new.

Downers

During the school year you're asked to put in 20 hours a week which is hard to do with schoolwork.

Advice to Potential Interns

Understand the time commitment you're making, working full time is longer than going to school and it can feel much more draining.

Real Rockets, Real Responsibility

5.0 of 5 stars

Los Angeles, CA | 2015 | VERIFIED INTERN

Uppers

The talented and encouraging engineers that interns can learn from, the responsibility that interns are given to make a difference, and being around real spaceflight hardware every day.

Downers

Sometimes it felt like I wasn't given enough guidance on what to do, but looking back it was an important learning experience to discover how to proceed when the path forward with some engineering problem isn't obvious.

Advice to Potential Interns

Consider SpaceX if you want to make a real contribution to space exploration and aren't afraid of diving into something without knowing the answers.

Advice to Management

Act more quickly on employees' change requests, especially ones that are trivial to implement.

Sample Interview Questions

Most of the interview was about engineering projects that I listed on my resume, such as my reasons for making specific design and construction decisions. There were also a few basic orbital mechanics and strength of materials questions. (I was interviewing for a structures internship.)

Downers

Advice to Potential Interns

Get out in the field and get dirty.

Advice to Management

The different engineering groups exist in their own universes. Cross-training or just increased exposure to other responsibilities on site would create a more interesting experience and provide for greater understanding on multi-discipline projects.

Best Summer I ever Had

Uppers

Being able to jump right on a project and working on a component that was important to the company.
Having the flexibility to easily interact with my coworkers and learn from them.
The food was amazing.

Downers

There was a period where I was placed far away from my team and that really reduced my communication with them.
Also, it was confusing as to who was my mentor for a period time. Initially, one person was my mentor but then he became preoccupied by another project so I was switched to another person. However, that switch was never clearly stated.

Advice to Potential Interns

SpaceX embodies the work hard play hard attitude. Definitely expect to put in a lot of hours but know that you are working on awesome projects and that you will be interacting with great people. I found that my previous project experience helped the most this past internship in letting me quickly transition to SpaceX. As a result, my Mentor gave me a lot of freedom and trusted me with the Project.

Also, it is very helpful to talk with your mentor early on to see what are his communication preferences. How often does he want updates, does he prefer email or lync, when does he want you to be at the office, etc.

Advice to Management

I would love having more tours of the facilities in order to get a better appreciation of the products that we are developing.
