About New York State Theatre Institute

Established through state legislation in 1974, the New York State Theatre Institute aims to put on high quality productions for family and school audiences. The Institute has also developed several different educational programs, in which all members of the professional staff participate. Its strong commitment to education is reflected in its solid internship participation-over 1,500 students have gone through the program since its inception-as well as its international exchange program.

During the program, interns work in several departments, including administrative, education, technical and performance departments. Interns can also audition for and are sometimes cast in institute productions. In addition to the highly individualized and pragmatic training, interns benefit from a strong network of theater professionals.
