Information Technology Intern Program

The primary location for the IT internship is in Omaha, Nebraska at our headquarters building.

The railroad has one of the world's largest privately owned telecommunications networks, which supports the company's 10,000 customers and 32,000-mile rail network across 23 states. Its information technology team conducts leading-edge work in areas such as real-time and predictive analytics, hardware engineering, sensor-based mote technology, train communications and other areas. Union Pacific also develops and builds its own proprietary hardware, software and systems. These types of opportunities provide college students with meaningful on-the-job experience through our internship program.

Our internships provide a mix of work experience, professional development opportunities and social networking. Students will work on real and challenging projects, getting hands-on experience and supportive input along the way. Our internships are designed to introduce you to Union Pacific Railroad and the career opportunities we have to offer.

The Information Technology Interns have overwhelming networking opportunities. The IT department offers a Welcome Committee (ITWC) which collaborates with the Companies new and innovative program called 'Interns for Interns'. They call themselves I4I. This program was created to stay competitive with other Fortune 200 companies. It offers growth and retention of interns into full-time employees. It reaches interns throughout the company by educating interns on the business, developing skill sets while enhancing work experience. These experiences are real world which include managing a budget, presentation skills, training and development.

The Components of I4I include an Advisory Board which serves to give guidance, develop leadership skills and support the I4I President and Committee Chairpersons. The committees include: Welcome, Networking, Corporate Development, Philanthropy and Communication. As interns move into full-time positions with Union Pacific, they will replace current Advisory Board members. This provides continued leadership opportunity and a succession plan.

ITWC is a structured program enables interns to learn the business of Union Pacific Railroad while also making personal connections with other interns and UP employees. This program is sponsored by the Executive Sr. Vice President & Chief Information Officer.
