About Excella Extension Center Program

About Excella Extension Center Program

Excella is an Agile technology firm and transformative partner to Washington, DC's leading organizations. The Extension Center, located at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, delivers Excella's award-winning internship program, where students gain hands-on work experience to complement their studies. The internship program is career-focused, advancing students' technical and professional skills through authentic experiences and mentoring.

The Program

Excella's Extension Center program addresses the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) skills shortage by engaging young people of varied backgrounds with the technology workforce. Under the mentorship of experienced Excella's technologists, students work part-time providing remote software development and support to Excella's client delivery teams in the federal, commercial, and non-profit sectors.

Students work on client projects developing software and growing their skills in C#, .NET, Java, Python, and Ruby. Students also learn database skills, Agile software development practices, and test-driven development principles.

Work schedules are flexible to accommodate classes, study time and other commitments. In the summer, students can work full-time on campus to further their skills and experience, and take advantage of travel and client engagement opportunities.

The office is professional and students are expected to dress and conduct themselves in business-like fashion. Students are provided with equipment to complete their work and are required to come to the office for their scheduled work time. Students receive performance reviews annually as a professional development tool.

Rising seniors may be invited to spend the summer in the Washington, DC area as part of an on-site client team. In addition to client work, these students have opportunities to engage with Excella project teams from around the region in a lunch/speaker series and social events that deepen their knowledge of the firm, our clients and culture. Graduating seniors interview for full-time roles in October preceding graduation.

Students are paid for their work with rates based on class year and program. Students are paid bi-weekly based on hours submitted via timesheet.

Duration of the Extension Center program is ongoing until graduation. The summer program is 12 weeks. Students are eligible for 401(k), commuting allowance (summer) and are invited to attend Excella-sponsored events and company outings.
