About Excella Consulting Extension Center Program

Excella Consulting is an IT consulting firm in Arlington, Virginia. Excella helps organizations use technology to transform big problems into lasting solutions. We believe great work is driven by experts who listen first and measure success by the positive impact on individuals, businesses, and communities. That's consulting with purpose. We are Excellians! We are Agilists and software developers. We are PMs and polyglots. We love to make big changes wherever we go. We place a premium on flexibility, taking initiative, and driving results. (And we're pretty fun, too!)

America has a shortage of workers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Universities can teach concepts but not provide real-world experience. Excella's Extension Center takes STEM education one-step further with an internship that provides real work experience under the tutelage of experienced software developers and consultants.

Located at Virginia Tech, the Excella Extension Center (XC) engages high-achieving technical students to provide remote software development and support to our client delivery teams in the Federal, commercial, and non-profit sectors. Our student team members work part-time under the direct supervision of our software development experts. Students work on client projects developing software and growing their skills in C#, .NET, Java, Python, and Ruby. Students also learn database skills, Agile software development practices, and test-driven development principles

Student schedules are flexible to bend around classes and other commitments with plenty of time left for study. In the summer, students have the opportunity to work full-time on campus, furthering their skills and experience with opportunities for travel and client engagement.

The office is professional and students are expected to dress and conduct themselves in business-like fashion. Students are provided with equipment to complete their work and are required to come to the office for their scheduled work time. Students receive performance reviews annually as a professional development tool.

Rising seniors may be invited to spend summer in the Washington DC area as part of an on-site client team. In addition to client work these students have opportunities to engage with Excella project teams from around the region in a lunch/speaker series and social events that deepen their knowledge of the firm, our clients, and culture. Graduating seniors interview for full-time roles in October preceding graduation.

Students are paid for their work with rates based on class year and program. Students are paid bi-weekly based on hours submitted via timesheet.

Duration of the Extension Center program is ongoing until graduation. The summer program is 12 weeks. Students are eligible for 401(k), commuting allowance (summer), and Excella sponsored events such as company outings.
