Southwestern Advantage Sales & Leadership Program

Southwestern Advantage is a Southwestern company. Located in Nashville, Tennessee since 1855, Southwestern began helping students finance their education by selling books in 1868. Today, Southwestern is comprised of ten companies engaged in businesses ranging from publishing and financial planning to executive recruiting and fundraising - generating revenue of over $250 million. In 2012, Southwestern was recognized on the Inc. 5000 for outstanding growth among private companies.

Students run their own business in the sales & leadership program selling Southwestern Advantage educational resources - books, software, and websites - to help millions of families across the United States and Canada save time, improve grades, and prepare for kindergarten, classes, and college. Southwestern Advantage offers a unique summer opportunity for college students to jumpstart their careers and their lives. Over the past 10 years, more than 20,000 students from over 300 colleges and universities have participated.

Student reps relocate to areas throughout the United States and Canada with others from their university or college. They share accommodations with other students in private homes with host families. Relocating for the summer and establishing a business in a new community is excellent professional experience. For the typical student rep, the program consists of one week of training in Nashville Tennessee followed by twelve weeks of building a business in their assigned community. All training, initial business supplies, and samples are provided free of charge. Students generally share transportation and are advised to bring enough money to cover their travel, food, and lodging for the start of the summer.

Students are independent contractors and purchase products from Southwestern Advantage at wholesale and sell them to customers at retail - the difference is the student rep's gross profit. The average first year student rep produces a gross profit of $2,500 per month. College credit is also available.
