Southwestern Advantage is a Southwestern company. Located in
Nashville, Tennessee since 1855, Southwestern began helping
students finance their education by selling books in 1868. Today,
Southwestern is comprised of ten companies engaged in businesses
ranging from publishing and financial planning to executive
recruiting and fundraising - generating revenue of over $250
million. In 2012, Southwestern was recognized on the Inc. 5000 for
outstanding growth among private companies.
Students run their own business in the sales & leadership
program selling Southwestern Advantage educational resources -
books, software, and websites - to help millions of families across
the United States and Canada save time, improve grades, and prepare
for kindergarten, classes, and college. Southwestern Advantage
offers a unique summer opportunity for college students to
jumpstart their careers and their lives. Over the past 10 years,
more than 20,000 students from over 300 colleges and universities
Student reps relocate to areas throughout the United States and
Canada with others from their university or college. They share
accommodations with other students in private homes with host
families. Relocating for the summer and establishing a business in
a new community is excellent professional experience. For the
typical student rep, the program consists of one week of training
in Nashville Tennessee followed by twelve weeks of building a
business in their assigned community. All training, initial
business supplies, and samples are provided free of charge.
Students generally share transportation and are advised to bring
enough money to cover their travel, food, and lodging for the start
of the summer.
Students are independent contractors and purchase products from
Southwestern Advantage at wholesale and sell them to customers at
retail - the difference is the student rep's gross profit. The
average first year student rep produces a gross profit of $2,500
per month. College credit is also available.
