About Graduate Public Service Internship (GPSI) at the University of Illinois at Springfield

The Graduate Public Service Internship (GPSI) program offers graduate students from the University of Illinois Springfield the opportunity to work within Illinois state government and municipal agencies. The 21-month program is part of the Center for State Policy and Leadership and gives participants the chance to earn an advanced degree while pursuing a career. Students work part-time during the academic year, while earning their Master's degrees, and work full time during the summer between their first and second year of school.

Interns with GPSI come from a range of academic backgrounds and are placed based on their academic concentrations. Past placements have included Energy Education Council, Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence, Illinois Commerce Comission, Illinois Department of Corrections, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, Illinois Department of Public Health, Illinois Department of Revenue, Illinois Envirnomental Protection Agency, Illinois Office of the Attorney General, Illinois Office of the Secretary of State, and Illinois State Board of Education. Interns work 20 hours a week during the academic year and full time in the summer months.  Duties vary by placement and may include database systems maintenance, lab and field studies, marketing, policy development, preparation of statistical reports, and web design, among others. Interns work under the mentorship of a placement advisor.
