About Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals

Established in 1983, the Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals is a full-year work/study program abroad, which is funded by the US Congress and German Bundestag. The program offers young adults from the US the chance to live, work, and study in Germany and young Germans to do the same in the US.

US participants live in Germany and are immersed in the language and culture. They receive two months of German language training at the start of the program, study at a German university or vocational school for a semester, and participate in an internship for five months. With travel and certain living expenses covered, participants also enjoy housing arrangements either with host families or with fellow participants in shared apartments or dorms. In addition, participants attend an orientation in Washington, DC prior to moving to Germany, as well as an evaluation seminar in New York City at the completion of the program.

Eligibility

US citizens and permanent residents ages 18 to 24 (at the start of the program) with a high school diploma are welcome to apply. Applicants should have some relevant coursework and work experience in their internship field. Prior German language knowledge is not required but is preferred. The program was designed for those focused on agricultural, business, technical, and vocational concentrations, but those in other fields are also eligible.
