About Breakthrough Collaborative

Established in 1978, Breakthrough Collaborative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping underserved middle school students pursue successful paths to college. Through a "students teaching students model," the organization recruits college and high school students to teach middle-schoolers. The curriculum is demanding and rigorous, preparing the middle school students for entrance into college-prep high schools. Breakthrough assists more than 5,000 students each year across 33 affiliate locations. The organization has strategic partnerships with various organizations, including Aspire Teacher Residency, MATCH Teacher Residency, and Teach For America.

In addition to assisting underserved students reach their college goals, Breakthrough is also committed to developing college and high school students interested in education. Teacher-interns take on significant responsibility, leading a class of middle school students through a demanding curriculum, which the intern has created. They will also design an elective course and serve as role models for the students. Interns undergo a thorough training before they begin teaching and receive support and mentorship from experienced teachers.
