Employment of reporters and correspondents, including sportswriters, who work for newspaper, periodical, book, and directory publishers¬†is projected to decline through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. This steep decline is due to industry consolidations, a drop in advertising revenue leading to layoffs, and other factors. Some job openings will arise from the need to replace workers who retire or move into other lines of work. Publications increasing their Internet presence may create opportunities for those working as online sportswriters. Sportswriters with expertise in Web design and programming should have improved job prospects. Opportunities will also be better at small, local newspapers and regional magazines.  ¬†
