According to the U.S. Department of Labor, employment opportunities for coaches, umpires, and other sports-related workers, including scouts, are expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2018, but competition for jobs will be stiff. There are approximately 1,000 professional sports scouts in the United States and most work for professional teams. Baseball is the sport that employs the greatest number of scouts. Due to the limited number of professional scouts, most job opportunities will be found with lower-level sports, such as with high school and college athletic teams.
