Employment of photographers will increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2018, according to the Occupational Outlook Handbook. The demand for new images should remain steady in education, communication, entertainment, marketing, and research. As the Internet continues to grow and more companies and organizations turn to electronic publishing, demand should remain strong for photographers to produce digital images. Photography is a highly competitive field. While the Internet has enabled professional photographers to market their services to a wider audience, digital photography has intensified the competition. More people have access to digital photography equipment and are able to take and store pictures, reducing the barrier of entry into this profession. Now more than ever, there are far more photographers than positions available. Only those who are extremely talented and highly skilled can support themselves as self-employed photographers. Many photographers take pictures as a sideline while working another job.
