Employment for prepress workers is expected to decline through 2024, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. While it is anticipated that the demand for printed materials will increase, prepress work will not, mainly because of new innovations and technology that allows prepress workers to do their jobs more efficiently, and for workers at publishing companies, graphic design companies, and advertising firms to design and format publications. Specialized computer skills will increasingly be needed to handle direct-to-plate and other new technology.
