Police Officers

Employment for police officers is expected to grow by 6 percent through 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), or more slowly than the average for all occupations. Little or no employment change is expected for detectives through 2022. Strong competition for jobs will exist at the federal level and in most state police departments. Opportunities will be best in local police departments, especially those which are located in high-crime areas or that offer relatively lower pay than other departments. The DOL reports that "applicants with a bachelor's degree and law enforcement or military experience, especially investigative experience, as well as those who speak more than one language, should have the best job opportunities."
