Plumbers and Pipefitters

Employment opportunities for plumbers (especially those with welding skills) are expected to grow faster than the average for all jobs through 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Job growth will be due to increased construction and renovation projects. Increased focus on water conservation will also create greater need for plumbers to retrofit parts. Since pipework is becoming more important in large industries, more workers will be needed for installation and maintenance work, especially where refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment are used. Pipefitters and steamfitters will enjoy good prospects as a result of the need for continued maintenance, as well as new construction, of factories, office buildings, and power plants. Changes in state laws regarding fire protection in businesses and homes should increase employment demand for sprinklerfitters. Employment opportunities fluctuate with local economic conditions, although the plumbing industry is less affected by economic trends than other construction trades.
